Fossicking Around Queensland.
Fossicking is such a fun and rewarding way to explore parts of Queensland.
Whether you’re hunting for sapphires, gold, or colorful agates, it’s an adventure that combines nature, history, and a little bit of treasure hunting.
We’ve fossicked all over Australia during our travels and found a few gems—not enough to retire early hahaha but enough to create some incredible memories with the kids.
One of our most special fossicking adventures was working hard to find our daughter’s birthstone, the boys worked early mornings in the hope they would find something unique and large.
After some long days we finally found the perfect topaz.
We turned it into a ring for her 30th birthday, shaping and polishing it ourselves at a gem club in Gympy, it was such an incredable process for the kids.
Such a rewarding and meaningful gift.

If fossicking sounds like your kind of fun, here’s a quick guide to getting started in Queensland:
Best Fossicking Spots in Queensland
1. Central Queensland Sapphire Gemfields
Think Rubyvale, Sapphire, and Anakie—these spots are world-famous for their sapphires.
Public fossicking areas make it easy to dig, sieve, and wash for your treasures.
2. Clermont Goldfields
Perfect for gold hunters! Bring a metal detector or gold pan to this historic area.
The rugged terrain adds to the thrill, but you might want a 4WD.
3. Agate Creek Gemfields
Near Forsayth, this spot is packed with vibrant agates perfect for jewelry.
Stay a few days at the local campground to fully explore the area.
4. Yowah Opal Fields
Famous for unique Yowah nuts, which hide stunning opals inside.
It’s like opening your very own treasure chest!
Must-Have Fossicking Gear
Gemstones: Sieves, a shovel, and water for washing.
Gold: Metal detector, gold pan, and a sturdy pickaxe.
Extras: Gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
When to Go?
April to September is the sweet spot—cooler weather makes fossicking a lot more enjoyable, especially in the hotter regions.
Tips for a Successful Fossicking Adventure
Do Your Homework: Know what’s in the area—sapphires, gold, or agates?
Learn to Identify: Use an app or guidebook to spot treasures in the rough.
Be Patient: It’s all about the journey. Even if you don’t find much, the experience is pure gold.
Why We Love It
Fossicking is more than just hunting for gems. It’s about creating memories, connecting with the land, and sharing those moments with family. Whether it’s the thrill of finding something shiny or simply enjoying the quiet of the outback, it’s an adventure you’ll want to add to your big lap.
So, grab your gear, get your fossicking license, and hit the road. Who knows what treasures are waiting for you just beneath the surface?
