Hi, we’re Pete and Tan from Artzone Travels Off-Grid Ventures. As Lanavan ambassadors, we’re excited to share a fortnightly series called ‘Give Me Five.’ As the name suggests, we’ll provide five tips we’ve learned over decades of traveling across Australia’s remote and off-grid locations in our caravans. We’re not just adventurers—we’re passionate storytellers eager to share our experiences, creativity, and the wisdom we’ve gained along the way.
This week, we’ll discuss Five tips for Off-grid Caravan Power while traveling in a caravan across Australia.
Modern technology has transformed off-grid living, making it more efficient and accessible than ever before. However even the most experienced caravanned can get caught out. By optimising your setup and following best practices, you can harness the full potential of solar power to enjoy the freedom of off-grid living without sacrificing comfort.
Here are five practical tips to keep your energy flowing efficiently and reliably while you embrace the great outdoors:
Plan high-energy tasks for peak sunlight hours. Run high-demand appliances (e.g. kettles, air fryers) during peak solar generation hours when your batteries are close to 100%. That way the batteries will recharge as the day wears on. Use 12V appliances to reduce use of inverters.

Like most of us we get caught out for those cloudy days or unexpected needs. Having a plan for this situation will reduce your stress and even have a hot meal at night. Switch to cooking on gas not induction cooker (240v). Bring a generator just in case and lastly head for a powered site at caravan park.

If you have an older caravan, replace all lights with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Avoid leaving appliances on standby particularly the inverter. How many times have we forgot to turn it off the coffee machine. Use thermal blinds or covers to keep the caravan cool in summer and warm in winter. Minimise the use of energy-intensive heaters or air conditioners; rely on fans or ventilation instead.

Invest in high-quality solar panels and lithium batteries you can afford with the right capacity for your energy needs. Fixed roof panels are the backbone for daily energy collection, however portable solar blankets/panels give flexibility for shaded areas.
Keep your panels clean as you’d be surprised how dusty they get travelling off grid on dirt roads. A little maintenance goes a long way in ensuring you capture every ray. Park your caravan in the sunniest spot to maximise solar panel efficiency. You’d be surprised how you find your spot late in the afternoon after driving all day to find the next day it is in shade most of the day.
